Internet Speed for Streaming: HD, 4K and Multiple TVs
Netflix recommends at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p and 15 Mbps for 4K on a stable connection. Multiply the per-stream requirement by simultaneous viewers, then allow capacity for other tasks. Other streaming services can have different requirements.
Plan for simultaneous screens
Three Netflix 4K streams need a combined 45 Mbps based on the service recommendation. Adding a 25% planning margin gives 56.25 Mbps, before other substantial traffic. This margin is our estimate rather than a requirement published by Netflix.
Resolution is only part of the story. A service can adjust picture quality to the available connection. Test at the television or streaming device; a fast result on a wired laptop does not establish that the TV has the same Wi-Fi throughput.
Troubleshoot buffering before upgrading
Pause other large transfers and replay the same program. If playback improves, shared bandwidth may explain the problem. If only one device buffers, compare its Wi-Fi position and try a wired connection where supported.
When every device slows down in the evening, compare wired measurements across several times of day. Keep a record for the provider. Also check whether the service itself is experiencing a problem; buying a faster plan cannot fix a remote outage.
Watching video and broadcasting use different directions
Watching uses mainly download bandwidth. Sending a livestream uses upload bandwidth. For broadcasting, start with the platform encoder settings, add audio and other upload tasks, and leave spare capacity.
At a constant 15 Mbps, one hour represents 6.75 GB of decimal data. That is a mathematical illustration, not Netflix data usage: actual video uses adaptive and variable bitrates. A data cap and connection speed are separate limits.
| Viewing workload | Download starting point |
|---|---|
| One 720p stream | 3 Mbps |
| One 1080p stream | 5 Mbps |
| One 4K stream | 15 Mbps |
| Two 4K streams | 30 Mbps combined |
| Three 4K streams + 25% margin | 56.25 Mbps planning estimate |

Common questions
Is 25 Mbps enough for 4K streaming?
It exceeds the 15 Mbps Netflix 4K recommendation for one stream if the connection stays stable and other traffic leaves enough capacity. Other services may specify a different requirement.
Do I need gigabit for streaming?
A few streams generally require far less than 1,000 Mbps. Add the requirements of concurrent activities and compare them with the usable speed at your devices before choosing a plan.
