Why Is My Download Speed So Slow? A Step-by-Step Check

First compare the units: 100 Mbps equals 12.5 MB/s before overhead. If the units match, check whether all downloads are slow or just one service, then compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi. Server limits, shared traffic and disk activity can slow a download even when a speed test looks fast.

Check the number before changing settings

A provider advertises megabits per second, while a browser or launcher may report megabytes per second. Divide Mbps by eight to compare them. A 100 Mbps plan delivering around 12 MB/s is close to its theoretical rate, rather than eight times too slow.

Some applications report MiB/s, a binary unit. One MiB/s is 8.388608 Mbps. Read the label carefully and use the same unit for both numbers. Avoid assuming that the largest number shown by a speed test is sustained performance.

Isolate the bottleneck

Change one condition at a time and keep the file source constant where possible. A speed test measures a path to its own server; it cannot guarantee equal throughput to every download service.

  1. Pause cloud sync, streaming and other large transfers, then retry.
  2. Compare another trusted download source. If only one source is slow, its server or the path to it may be limiting throughput.
  3. Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi on the same device. A wired improvement points toward local wireless conditions.
  4. Check launcher bandwidth limits and observe disk or CPU activity during pauses.
  5. Repeat wired measurements at quiet and busy times. Share the results with your ISP if the issue affects several sources and devices.

Use a measured rate to estimate the remaining time

For a remaining 10 GB at a sustained 5 MB/s, divide 10,000 MB by 5: 2,000 seconds, or 33 minutes 20 seconds. If that rate is already measured, do not deduct an efficiency allowance again.

Our calculator uses 90% as an adjustable scenario when starting from a nominal link speed. A very slow server or weak Wi-Fi can perform much worse; a single overhead percentage cannot model every bottleneck.

Common questions

Why is my speed test faster than a download?

The test and download can use different servers and network paths. Downloads can also be limited by the application, server, CPU or disk.

Should I turn off security software to speed up a download?

Do not disable protection as a routine speed fix. Start with unit checks, another trusted source, wired networking and background traffic. Investigate specific software behavior using its official support instructions.

Transfer examples use decimal GB and Mbps unless specified. Efficiency and spare capacity are stated assumptions. Service requirements can change; verify the linked documentation before choosing a plan.
